Quonset buildings are world renowned for their durability. Originally developed by the U.S. Army, these prefabricated metal buildings proved combat ready and versatile enough to handle a wide-range of fluctuating temperatures. It’s no surprise they have been used in almost every theater of operation. And you know what they say, necessity is the Mother of Invention. As Quonset huts proved to be the superior building choice of the military, civilian enterprises took note. Today, Quonset steel arches are commonly used in agricultural and industrial settings. They are lightweight, easy to assemble and can be installed with just a few simple hand tools. Recently, a customer residing in Arkansas was looking for a superiorly built metal building that could withstand harsh weather conditions on the prairie.
Terry, of Arkansas.
Living on the Prairie in AR the quonset just made sense. The only thing between me and the south pole is a barbed wire fence.
Like so many customers before him, Terry soon discovered that a Quonset hut would prove to be a pragmatic approach to equipment storage. Enlisting the help of his father, Terry was able to witness firsthand the intrinsic durable nature that every steel arch building offers.
Starting the building in late November posed some challenges with the weather as winter set in with negative temperatures and single-digit highs delayed his building time. However, they did get to experience the quality of the building firsthand with a heavy snowfall before the building was complete. “If I were 10 years younger it probably would go quicker. My dad helps when he can.”
Superior engineered steel arch buildings can withstand heavy snow loads and other forces of nature

Terry didn’t have to wait long to see how his building held up against winters on the prairie. As almost as the final pieces of cross-section metal were assembled, Terry’s prairie was hit with an astounding 20 inches of snow. “And the building held it yell,” he said. Because of the building’s curved shell, large amounts of snow are unable to accumulate on the Quonset hut’s roof. As opposed to traditional shingled roofs, steel arch buildings are non-abrasive and are less likely to accumulate snow. Arches are also inherently strong. There is a reason the Romans built an entire empire on that design. And combined with the superior durability of American steel, it’s nearly impossible to bend or crumple the steel arch design of a Quonset hut.
Quonset huts are suitable for almost any climate or building environment

Part of the allure of the Quonset hut is that they can be quickly assembled or disassembled before relocating to a new site. Clear-span interiors are also attractive designs for workshops, agricultural enterprises or for general storage. They are also durable as they are long-lasting. Quonset huts are also resistant to high winds, hail and other natural elements that are detrimental to traditional brick and mortar structures. Each DIY can be easily installed on any flat surface with a few simple hand tools and ladders… a couple of willing family members or friends would also help!
