For centuries, the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris stood as a beacon for distressed souls and a testament to man’s faith. The towering spire oversaw tumultuous regime change, societal upheaval and the evolution of the Christian faith. This architecture marvel had withstood the horrors of Nazi occupation and the uncertainty of radical revolutionists. All the while, the cathedral remained largely unchanged – save a few ambitious renovation projections, which would ultimately be the building’s undoing. In an everchanging world, the Notre Dame Cathedral remained steadfast in its mission and reflection of French society. Unfortunately, that all changed in a matter of minutes when the April 15 fire destroyed the iconic spire and adjacent roof. The devilish inferno lashed at the building relentlessly before firefighters could extinguish the blaze.
While the building remained intact, the extensive damage rendered the cathedral largely useless. A debate quickly unfolded on how to best restore the building to its original glory. Should restorationists remain true to the building’s provenance and only use materials that were available at the time of the cathedral’s destruction? Or, should they break from tradition and use this disaster as an opportunity to ease the historic structure into modern times?
